Early Years: From Zanzibar to London

Freddie was born on 5 September 1946 on the island of Zanzibar as Farrokh Bulsara. At his English-speaking boarding school, friends gave him the nickname “Freddie”, which stayed with him for life, while his teachers quickly recognised his immense musical talent and recommended that he learn piano – the foundation for his later career. Following a political revolution, his family had to flee to London in 1964, and the 17-year-old Freddie found a new home in Hounslow. While studying graphic design at Ealing College of Art, he met Tim Staffell, singer of the band Smile, as well as Brian May and Roger Taylor, the future founding members of Queen. He accompanied the band as a roadie and was already brimming with creative ideas for unforgettable stage shows.

The Founding of Queen: A Band Makes History

When Tim Staffell left the band Smile in 1970, Freddie quickly took over the microphone and became the new lead singer. He renamed the band Queen and chose the iconic stage name "Mercury" for himself. With the arrival of bassist John Deacon in 1971, the legendary line-up of Queen was complete:

  • Freddie Mercury: Vocals & piano

  • Brian May: Guitar & backing vocals

  • John Deacon: Bass

  • Roger Taylor: Drums & backing vocals

In 1973, the band secured their first record deal with EMI and released their debut single Keep Yourself Alive, followed shortly by their first studio album Queen. At this time, Freddie lived in West Kensington with Mary Austin, one of the most important figures in his life.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Queen played their first headline concert outside the UK in Germany? The gig took place at the live club Underground in Bonn-Muffendorf!

Commercial Breakthrough and the Queen Sound

With the single Seven Seas of Rhye (1974), Queen climbed into the UK Top 10. Their second album, Queen II, earned the band their first silver record. They finally celebrated their first massive international success with the hit Killer Queen from their third album Sheer Heart Attack.

A huge part of their success was the flamboyant and electrifying stage show. Freddie blended glam rock, extravagant costumes, and pure energy into a spectacle that captivated audiences worldwide.

The Masterpiece: Bohemian Rhapsody

In October 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody was released. This epic song, written by Mercury, broke all conventions, stayed at number 1 in the UK charts for nine weeks, and marked the beginning of the modern music video era. For this masterpiece, Freddie Mercury was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 1976. The multi-layered lyrics still leave room for speculation today. Many experts believe that Freddie worked through his coming out in this song. However, he never publicly acknowledged his homosexuality. In 1976, his romantic relationship with Mary Austin came to an end, but they remained the closest of confidants until his death.

Further Milestones and Hits

Up until 1979, one hit followed another: Somebody to Love, Tie Your Mother Down, We Are the Champions, and We Will Rock You. For the song Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Freddie even picked up the acoustic rhythm guitar himself. Queen established an unmistakable sound that smoothly transitioned between rock, opera, funk, disco, and ballads. Everything was carried by Mercury's unique and extremely versatile voice, which shone in every musical style. Want to play Queen’s hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” and other classics yourself?

The Later Years: Munich, Live Aid and a Farewell Far Too Soon

To escape the relentless British press, Freddie moved his base to Munich between 1979 and 1985. During this highly creative phase, he not only enjoyed an undisturbed private life but also recorded his first solo album Mr. Bad Guy (released in 1985) at the famous Musicland Studios and created global hits such as Another One Bites the Dust with Queen.

In 1985, he returned to London and moved into a mansion in Kensington, where he lived with his partner Jim Hutton until his death. On 13 July 1985, he then created one of the most magical moments in modern music history: at Live Aid in London’s Wembley Stadium, Queen simply stole the show from every other global superstar with an incredible 20-minute performance. It is still regarded as one of the best live concerts of all time. Nobody knew that the band would play their very last concert together at Knebworth Park on 9 August 1986.

Towards the end of the 1980s, rumours about Mercury’s health grew considerably, but his AIDS diagnosis was kept secret for a long time. Queen did not tour to promote The Miracle (1989), a first for the band. Only on 23 November 1991, after the release of Innuendo, did he confirm his illness to the public. Just one day later, on 24 November 1991, Freddie Mercury died of pneumonia at the age of only 45. In accordance with his wishes, his closest confidante Mary Austin buried his ashes in a place that remains a closely guarded secret to this day.

An Immortal Legacy

The music of Freddie Mercury and Queen lives on. In April 1992, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon honoured their frontman with the massive Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, featuring superstars like David Bowie, Elton John, and George Michael. In 1995, the final Queen album Made in Heaven was released, featuring Mercury's last vocal recordings.

Even today, decades after his death, the Oscar-winning blockbuster "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) starring Rami Malek brings the magic of Queen to a whole new generation. Freddie was right when he once said:

"I won't be a rockstar. I will be a legend."
